What then? Should one wait, and attempt to persuade the authorities by preaching? This was the view of the Zürich Reformer, Zwingli. Or should the community of Christians, led by the Holy Spirit, initiate Scripture–backed reforms regardless of the views of the council? So argued Zwingli’s radical disciples. Despite continuing attempts to discuss the matters in dispute (the mass, baptism and tithes), the gap between the two parties widened. “No one can truly know Christ except he follow him in life.”
